A long weekend is behind us, and the 2004 Colorado Disc Dogs frisbee dog
season is finally ready to wind down. The Colorado Canine Challenge steps
back into the history books for another year, with a few more pages of
incredible dogs and their hard-working owners immortalized.
The Colorado Disc dogs would very much like to thank all the people that
helped get this event together this year. We had tons of help, and it was
great.
We had the pleasure of welcoming the one and only Alex Stein to Colorado
for the event! Our founding father graced us with his presence, did some
judging, told some stories, signed some autographs, and pulled out one
heck of a surprise for everyone Saturday afternoon.
It was our delight to be witness as Alex awarded Ashley Whippet Lifetime
Achievement Awards to Mike and Kathy Miller from southern California, and
also one to Rick Brydum of Colorado. These folks have collectively over 70
years of frisbee dog support, promotion, enthusiasm and encouragement that
they have provided so many countless other people and their dogs.
The rest of the awards handed out this weekend took considerably less time
to earn!
Saturday's event was a UFO World Cup Major.
The day began with a special Junior division. 5 kids and their dogs
stepped up and were all awarded handsome medals. Look out for the Brisse
triplets in the future - they are already throwing out past 10 and 15
meters! They were joined by Tess Carpenter and Emma Stein out there as we
all got a look at frisbee dog teams of 2014!!
In the Novice division, all eyes were on Jane Henderson and Ringo and Matt
DiAno and Maggie. They went into the weekend neck and neck for the
Colorado Disc Dogs Rookie of the year award - Jane and Ringo held a 2 point
lead. After the final round, Matt and Maggie took home the gold, but Jane
and Ringo held on for the second place silver. Taking the bronze was first
timers Corbin Wagoner and Gus. With the Maggie-Ringo finish, the Colorado
State Rookie of the year title is now all even with one event to go!! We
will see these two in Lyons, Colorado on Sep. 19th!!
In the Intermediate division, the action was non-stop! Finishing in 3rd
with 25 points was Jeff Mueller and Flygirl. In second was Gayle O'Malley
and Sheela with 27 points. Taking the win with only 1.5 points over
second, James Commuso and Blu began a great weekend the best way
possible - with a gold around Blu's neck!!
The Open's put on a great show! the always strong freestyle that we see at
the Colorado Canine Challenge kept up to its historical high standards.
